Women of the Apocalypse Won!

Posted by Absolute XPress on May 30, 2010 with Comments Comments

WOTA-WinnersIf you’ve been following along, you’ll know that back in March “Women of the Apocalypse” was nominated in two Categories for the Canadian Aurora Awards.

The entire anthology, written by Eileen Bell, Billie Milholland, Roxanne Felix and Ryan McFadden, was nominated under the BEST WORK IN ENGLISH (OTHER) category, and the novella “Pawns Dreaming of Roses” written by Eileen Bell was nominated under the BEST SHORT-FORM WORK IN ENGLISH category.

So it is with great pleasure that we pass along the good news:

“Women of the Apocalypse” won in BOTH categories.

Eileen_AuroraLast Sunday, at Key-Con in Winnipeg, Manitoba,  three of the Apocalyptic Four accepted the award along with AXP’s owner Brian Hades (in the picture above). Eileen Bell also accepted one for her novella (the picture to the right).

This kind of “double win” was unheard of until Robert J. Sawyer did it 1997 and then again in 2000. Since both Eileen and Ryan were once students of Robert it seems his luck might have rubbed off on them (of course, we should mention that Robert J. Sawyer won an Aurora as well this year for Best Novel in English for “Wake”). A full list of this year’s winners and nominees can be found on the Aurora Awards Website.

“Women of the Apocalypse” is a novella collection about four women who are accidentally chosen to take up the mantles of champions and save the world from the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

Four writers, four horsemen, four Women of the Apocalypse. The world will never be the same again.

Over the weekend, the crew from the collaborative anthology “Women of the Apocalypse” had a book signing in Edmonton, Alberta. They were gracious enough to provide us with a couple photos from the event.

“Women of the Apocalypse” has been nominated in the English Works (Other) category (anthologies/ magazines) and Eileen Bell’s novella “Pawns Dreaming of Roses” has been nominated in the English Short Works category.

If you want to meet some of these authors in person, Billie, Ryan and Eileen will be at Ad Astra (Toronto, April 9-11) and at Key Con (Winnipeg, May 21-23.)

You can check out more photo’s, and stay up to date on their whereabouts, on their facebook fan page “Apocalyptic Four” and their website http://womenoftheapocalypse.com.

More about the book:

Four women. Four shooters. Four destinies to save the world…

The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse are coming. And four Archangels must find the perfect champions to save the world: fighters, warriors, soldiers, and brave men, all ready to fight for humanity against end times. All they have to do is drink a shooter — a caustic mix of alcohol and divinity that will imbue them with the conviction to battle the Four.

Shiny sticker :)

The only problem is these warriors don’t drink the shooters.

Call it fate, chance, or what you will, but four women drink the divine concoction. Alexandra Carlton, Julia Wolfe, Emily Keller and Dinah Medrano must all take up the mantles of champions … whether they want to or not.

Four writers, four horsemen, four Women of the Apocalypse. The world will never be the same again.

But not only that. The novella “PAWNS DREAMING OF ROSES” written by Eileen Bell has been nominated under the BEST SHORT-FORM WORK IN ENGLISH category.

AXP is thrilled that Eileen and her fellow authors have touched so many lives that they were nominated for such a prestigious award. It’s a fantastic start to the 2010 year.

If anyone is attending Keycon, May 21-23 2010, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, we hope that you will show your support and vote for these works.
