Slush Pile Reader: Volunteer Job Advertisement
Overview:
Are you a writer that’s looking to improve your work? Are you looking to gain experience in the publishing world? Do you enjoy speculative genre fiction?
If you’ve answered “yes” to all of these, then have you considered becoming a slush pile reader?
Absolute Xpress Publishing is looking for several volunteer Slush Pile Readers.
Being a volunteer Slush Pile Reader gives writers the “inside scoop” on what goes on behind the scenes at a small publishing house. The primary purpose of this position is the reading and evaluating of manuscripts submitted to Absolute Xpress. Not only will you start to notice ways to better your own writing, but you will gain valuable contacts within the publishing world.
This position can be filled by someone living anywhere in the world as long as they have a reliable internet connection and a passion for science fiction, fantasy and horror.
Duties and Responsibilities:
A minimum of one (1) manuscript is to be evaluated per month – more where possible and under agreement by the reader. For each manuscript evaluation the following must be completed:
- Read a minimum of 3 chapters or 50 pages (whichever is more) of the work. Any less must be justified.
- Readers will need to be able to comment on plot inconsistencies and progression, character development, dialogue, pacing, and overall writing skill.
- Complete an evaluation form, including a recommendation on publication.
- Responsible for providing feedback and recommendations to the Editor in a timely manner.
NOTE: Editorial comments must be constructive and helpful as they will assist the editorial staff in determining whether to accept or reject the manuscript in question, and may also be forwarded to the author when appropriate.
Readers may also offer comments to improve the work of the author in general.
Education/ Experience/ Skills:
- A love of reading and writing is a must!
- Experience giving and receiving feedback, such as what takes place in a writing group.
- Ability to provide detailed feedback and make publish or reject recommendations to the Editor.
- The ability to express ideas clearly and logically
- Knowledgeable of/ well read within the genres of science fiction, fantasy & horror
- Have a firm grasp of the English language and its use in storytelling
- Have edited/ polished/ critiqued several writing project of your own or others (even they haven’t been published yet).
