Insights into the FFC

Posted By Absolute Xpress on March 9, 2010

For our third Flash Fiction Challenge (FFC for short) we recruited the help of Marie Bilodeau, Author of the Heirs of Broken Land trilogy. Despite her own time lines, the final book in her trilogy “Sorceress of Shadows” comes out this April, she agreed to be a Special Guest Reviewer for the challenge. Below are a few of her insights about what it’s like to be on the other side of this challenge; what it’s like to be a reviewer.

thiefCartoonAbsolute XPress threw down the gauntlet once again with its third flash fiction challenge.  This time, writers everywhere were challenged to write about thieves and scoundrels in the genres of horror, science-fiction and fantasy.  And many fine writers answered that call.

Let’s face it – deep down inside we all love scoundrels.  A little piece of us would love to be as wild, free and uncaring as they are, able to move without fear of repercussion or worry of society’s reactions.  To just be your insane self, with clear purpose and direction, and the tools, skills and lack of inhibitions to get you there – come on, that just sounds like fun!

The theme, however, proved more of a challenge than we could have imagined. Not on the writers’ parts – they certainly tackled the theme with unscrupulous ambition.  It was the reviewers who had a tough time.  So many great stories and so many different perceptions of scoundrels!

The authors gave us a lot to chew on.  As reviewers, we had to analyze what we felt best represented scoundrels.  It was tough. As it turns out, there are lots of ways to break laws and freak people out.  There was so much potential in all of the stories that it took us an extra week of debate to get it down to the final 20.

Those who didn’t make it in this anthology, take heart.

Your stories were not bad.  Some had vital flaws that might have been caught with careful re-reads and test readers.  Others needed some refinement and growth, and a good copy editor.  Some just had too much crammed in there for a thousand-word long story.  As readers, we need some familiar footing to find our way to your characters and plot.  I was personally pissed off with some stories – they were so good, but those fundamental flaws lowered their ranking.  So I hope you all stick with it and try again, or try somewhere else, write something completely different – it doesn’t matter, just stick with it and keep increasing your skills.  It’ll be worth it to catch your publication prize.  After all, like most thieves and scoundrels teach us, half the fun is the thrill of the hunt.

The success of this contest is increasing, so expect another one soon.  Thanks to all of the authors who sent in a story, and those of you who didn’t make it in, please try again!  I personally can’t wait to read more from all of you.

Merry hunting!

We’ve Been Nominated!!

Posted By Absolute Xpress on March 4, 2010

ff-aurora-trophyAXP is proud to announce that our Novella collection “Women of the Apocalypse” has been nominated twice for an Aurora Award (Canadian Award for Science Fiction and Fantasy Literature – like the Hugo in the USA).

The entire anthology, written by Eileen Bell, Billie Milholland, Roxanne Felix and Ryan McFadden, has been nominated under the BEST WORK IN ENGLISH (OTHER) category.

But not only that. The novella “PAWNS DREAMING OF ROSES” written by Eileen Bell has been nominated under the BEST SHORT-FORM WORK IN ENGLISH category.

AXP is thrilled that Eileen and her fellow authors have touched so many lives that they were nominated for such a prestigious award. It’s a fantastic start to the 2010 year.

If anyone is attending Keycon, May 21-23 2010, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, we hope that you will show your support and vote for these works.

Schedule Changes

Posted By Absolute Xpress on February 9, 2010

Good Morning,calendar

When AXP re-focused its publishing platform last fall, we worried that we might not attract as many submissions as we would like. So, since our Flash Fiction Challenge was doing well, we came up with a plan to publish four Challenges’ per year.

In retrospect, it seems we only needed to let people know we were here and the submissions started flooding in; quality novels and novellas from both new and established writers. We are thrilled to know that you want us to produce your books.

Because of this outpouring of submissions, we’ve figured out a way to produce eight new books this year. Of course with expansion some things have to change.

In the end, we have decided to reduce the Flash Fiction Challenge from four times a year to three. It’s a decision we are making it for all the right reasons and we are happy to do it.

The new schedule isn’t too different from our original one, all we really did was add an extra month to the publication time lines, but it makes a world of difference to our overall schedule and gives us more time to produce a higher quality anthology.

New Flash Fiction Challenge Schedule

Session Open Close Publish
One December 1 January 15 March 31
Two April 1 May 15 July 31
Three August 1 September 15 November 30

The authors and stories that have been selected for publication in “Thieves and Scoundrels: Flash Fiction Challenge #3″ will be announced later this week. The anthology itself will be published on March 31 as per our new schedule.

With five cool novels and three Flash Fiction Challenges scheduled this year we can only see good things for 2010.

Thank you for your support as readers, writers and fans.

Flash Fiction Challenge #3 Closed

Posted By Absolute Xpress on January 25, 2010

Closed SignOn January 15, the third Flash Fiction Challenge closed with almost 80 submissions (almost double what we received for challenge #2).

First, I want to thank each and every one of you for submitting to our challenge, and to those of you who helped spread the word on facebook, twitter and your own blogs. It has really meant a lot to us.

Second, everyone who submitted to the challenge should receive a response by January 31st. If that changes, I’ll post a quick note to let you all know. The authors with stories selected for publication will be announced in early February right here on the blog.

Third, I’m happy to announce that our very own Marie Bilodeau (author of the ‘Heirs of a Broken Land’ trilogy) has agreed to be this Challenge’s special guest reviewer. Marie will get an inside look at how the Flash Fiction Challenge works from behind the scenes and will share her thoughts and tips with you in a guest blog post in February.

“Flash Fiction Challenge #3: Thieves and Scoundrels” will be published at the end of February so keep your eyes open for it.

And don’t forget that “Flash Fiction Challenge #4″ opens on March 1 with a new and exciting theme.
